<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
This past Sunday I had an amazing opportunity to go on a challenging run with Nike in San Francisco. The plan – run five miles along the Berkeley Marina, hop on the Nike bus and travel to the heart of San Francisco for a seven mile city run to the Palace of Fine Arts. Stop for a short break to refuel and grab water and continue on a six mile run across the Golden Gate Bridge to Sausalito. Refuel and relax with friends both new and old at Barrel House Tavern along the waterfront. Total mileage for the day – 18 miles.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
I was looking forward to this run all week. Can you blame me? I was a little concerned about the heavy mileage since I have been training for shorter distances, but I am always up for a challenge. I have run marathons and the Hood to Coast relay in the past so I knew what to expect as far as mileage. After a restless night on Saturday due to my excitement, I woke up a 6am on Sunday morning, got together my Nike gear and headed over to Berkeley.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-31.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="649" id="i-2149" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-31.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-31.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
I arrived at the Berkeley Marina at 7am and spotted the Nike Bus right away. After some brief introductions to other runners we boarded the bus to find a personalized Nike tank and the New<a href="http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/flyknit-lunar2-running-shoe/pid-830248/pgid-1499411" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;">Flyknit Lunar 2</a>‘s to try out for the run! The excitement on the bus was electric. Nike sure knows how to treat their runners right. I have loved running in my Flyknit Lunar 1′s, so I was excited to lace up the new version and I loved the updated design. The sole felt a bit more supportive to me and they updated the tongue of the shoe so it slides around less. Two thumbs up from this runner.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-11.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="649" id="i-2132" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-11.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-11.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
I laced up for run number one and we headed out along the Berkeley Marina. With magnificent views of the water, the run was the perfect way to start the day. I settled in with the slower pace group and we chatted along the water. I didn’t want to start out too fast and burn out on the final miles of the run. This run was an out and back five miler and when we arrived back at the bus we hopped on for some snacks, water and recovery with a massage roller. I love my carbs and the blueberry bagel with cream cheese tasted so good. I was fueled and ready for run number two!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
On our way to San Francisco we were treated to some history of Nike and the Just Do It campaign that launched 25 years ago. This run was created in part to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the creation of a campaign that has had an incredible impact on athletes around the world. We were invited to take part in a run to challenge us and show us how to live the Just Do It motto. We were pushed out of our comfort zones and into a place where we accepted the challenge and surprised ourselves. It’s amazing what you can accomplish when someone believes in you and stays with you through the challenge!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-21.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="649" id="i-2134" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-21.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-21.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
We headed into the city and started our second run in the heart of San Francisco. I love running through the city and exploring new places and we could not have asked for better weather. It was sunny, clear and warm. A perfect day for running a dream run. We stopped for a few photo opportunities and conquered some hills before ending at the Palace of Fine Arts.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-3-1.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="380" id="i-2130" originalw="362" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-3-1.jpg?w=362" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-3-1.jpg?w=724" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="362" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
From here I felt the excitement from everyone running brewing. A few runners were starting to feel the distance in their legs, me included, but no one was going to miss the final epic run across the Golden Gate Bridge into Sausalito! Now was the time to put that Just Do It motto to work!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-41.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="365" id="i-2146" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-41.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-41.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
We left from the Palace of Fine Arts and ran past Chrissie Field and up to the Golden Gate Bridge. The day was picturesque and gorgeous. There was a brutal hill climb up to the Golden Gate, but once you arrived at the top those first few steps across the Golden Gate made it all worth it! Photos could not do the view justice. You could see all the way across the Bay. From here we entered the last four miles of our run. The bridge was crowded so we had to weave in and out of tourists, but that just added to the fun and challenging day.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2-1.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="487" id="i-2155" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2-1.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2-1.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
After we crossed the bridge we went down into Sausalito and finished the final few miles on a downhill and then short run along the water to the Barrel House Tavern, our restaurant for the post run chow down! Nike went all out and I could not be more grateful. The meal was three courses of runner fuel and we even had custom Just Do It menu’s!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-5.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="649" id="i-2164" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-5.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-5.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
The meal provided us with a way to reflect on what we had achieved and learn more about the runners we shared this journey with. We laughed and shared many moments from the day and hopes for the future of running in San Francisco and the growth of an incredible community that is willing to take on challenges head on.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
I learned so much at this event and have a better understanding of the meaning of Just Do It. I may not have been the fastest runner, but we all had the heart and the drive to achieve what many people would say is impossible. Together we can do so much. This is only the beginning of great things to come and I personally am rejuvenated in my running life. I am looking forward to taking my running to the next level and learning and challenging myself on a continual basis. I am even more excited to become a running coach in April!</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
As a college basketball player, I was always used to challenging myself in short sprint distances and my transition to long distance running over the last three years has taught me that I can face any challenge head on and learn and grow. Surrounding myself with positive and supportive people has made this transition one I am beginning to feel is what I was meant to do. I can’t wait to run with the Just Do It crew again and meet and challenge many new runners in San Francisco and beyond.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
Doubt can be a struggle for me and I was doubting my running this last month. Sunday changed my view of my running and reenergized my desire to challenge myself. My goal this year is to become a faster, more efficient runner and this weekend helped to jump start my belief in my resilience as an athlete and runner.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-1-1.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; line-height: inherit; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="487" id="i-2177" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-1-1.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-1-1.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; line-height: inherit; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
Thank you Nike, the crew of the Just Do It run in SF and everyone who has supported me along my journey. Here is to many more inspirational and challenging runs in the futures. Never stop believing in yourself and don’t forget to challenge yourself on a regular basis. You’ll learn about yourself and become a stronger person with every challenge you conquer.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
If you’re looking for a huge challenge – check out the Nike NTC Tour in LA this March 14-16! I’ll be there and can’t wait to take my training to a whole new level! Ladies and gentlemen, today I am going to talk to you about squats and weights. For most people these are dreaded words, especially if you are a cardio queen or die hard runner. Take it from me, to become a better and faster runner you must incorporate squats and various other weight bearing exercises. I have noticed changes in my race times when I am focusing on cross training and when I am strictly running. I see a huge difference when I do functional exercises to strengthen my leg muscles and upper body. Squats, weighted lunges, planks, push-ups and any body weight exercise will greatly improve your running form, speed and agility. It will also help to prevent injury. </div>

Today I did a squat routine outside and loved it. You don’t always have to go to the gym to get in a good workout. Mix up the location of your workout and the drills you do for optimal results and to keep your body guessing. There is nothing worse than getting stuck in a rut! A few things to remember when doing squats are to keep your chest up and your back flat. You also want to make sure you sit deep into your squat and keep your booty low to the ground. As a runner, my hamstrings are always tight and getting low in a squat can be hard. Start out slow and work on the moves each day, trying to go lower and hold the exercise longer than the previous day. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
<a href="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2.jpg" style="-webkit-transition: none; border-bottom-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.0980392); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; box-sizing: border-box; color: #bb0000; text-decoration: none; transition: none;"><img alt="Image" class="size-full wp-image aligncenter" height="365" id="i-2058" originalw="487" scale="2" src-orig="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2.jpg?w=487" src="http://reasontoplay.files.wordpress.com/2014/02/photo-2.jpg?w=974" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: border-box; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0.5rem auto; max-width: 100%; vertical-align: middle;" width="487" /></a></div>

There are many alternate squat positions you can take. The wide-leg squat, regular squat, weighted squat, pulse squat and more. With lunges you can do jumping lunges, regular lunges, side lunges, weighted lunges, cross-back lunges, and many other variations. Make sure you keep mixing up your workouts by trying out different variations and working different muscle groups. Change is your friend and makes your body stronger. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">

Here is a quick and simple at-home routine you can do to strengthen your muscles and become a stronger runner. It includes five moves that you repeat 3-5 times depending on athletic ability. Start slow and work your way up as you get stronger. </div>
<ul style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; list-style-type: square; margin: 1.6rem 0px; padding: 0px 0px 0px 4rem;">
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Wide Leg Squat – 20 Reps</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Lunge with Rotation – 20 reps alternating legs (10 on each leg)</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Jump Squats – 20 reps</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Forward Lunge – 20 reps alternating legs (10 on each leg)</li>
<li style="box-sizing: border-box;">Push-ups – 1 minute</li>
</ul>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">
You should feel the burn in your thighs and glutes. You should also feel your heart rate go up during the exercises. Be intense during the workout and only take a one minute break between sets. The push-up will change up your movements and help you build a stronger core and upper body. </div>
<div style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #333333; font-family: 'Lucida Grande', 'Lucida Sans Unicode', 'Lucida Sans', Geneva, Verdana, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 23px; margin-bottom: 2.3rem;">

Cross training is the backbone of any good run program and should be done at least two to three times a week. Try out these drills and let me know what you think! Do you notice a difference in your running when you cross train? </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week marked the first week of half marathon training. I successfully completed every workout on my schedule and am extremely proud. If you know me, that never happens! I workout and run a lot but I can rarely stick to a strict schedule. This time around I am really trying to see how I do with a stricter training regimen. I want to try to beat my personal best of a 1:53 and am aiming for a sub 1:50 time. I know I can do this if my training goes right and all the stars align on race day. Finger's crossed my training pays off!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am training for the Nike Women's Half Marathon in Washington DC for the second straight year. I had one of the best races of my life there last year and can't wait to go back. The city, the atmosphere and the good friends are all what set this race apart. Last year the race was on my actual birthday which made it extra special. This year it is the day before my birthday, so it will still be a great moment. I also get to tour around DC after the race with my family. I'm excited for the journey and for the race. It may be my last year going considering the cost of travel there, so I will savor the moment. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As for training, I am using the Nike Women's Marathon DC Training App and am happy with it so far. Later on in training I may have to substitute some of the running days for cross training days to keep my body healthy, but all in all, it's a good plan. My training is a mixture of easy running, tempo runs, track workouts and long runs. I am also doing yoga once or twice a week and mixing in some strength and agility training days at the gym and with the Nike Training Club App. I find that I run my best when I mix up my training and that I stay away from injury this way. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have to give a shout-out to the Running Diva's SF Crew that sent me one of their tanks this week. It definitely gave me some extra motivation to push through those miles and stick with my plan. The ladies of this crew are an inspiration and I am proud to be repping the crew! A few of them are running DC! I will wear this proudly during training!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Are you training for any upcoming races or maybe even DC? I'd love to hear how your training is going!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Runner's feet are so important! When my feet hurt or have blisters my whole run will suffer. I have always been one to love new socks. I try to keep a new pair around in case the need arises. New socks make my feet feel good and that transfers to a great day and an even better run. Maybe you agree, maybe you don't, but my feet love to be pampered, especially when they have to run so many miles on concrete roads. That being said, I am always looking for socks that make my feet feel great both before, during and after a run. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwpOwjpGYoo9YLhspl9ky9YEGvbJWl03agdo-qYb7m5n3M81h_qbCumhn0nKnp1tGjne8L6p_4TFb-vrVFPzy9SYSd_jIlNmeFHHlsqrW8Rf2cCLwt_u2hgaDJRgwieHSKelLTu7H-wQ/s1600/photo+4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwpOwjpGYoo9YLhspl9ky9YEGvbJWl03agdo-qYb7m5n3M81h_qbCumhn0nKnp1tGjne8L6p_4TFb-vrVFPzy9SYSd_jIlNmeFHHlsqrW8Rf2cCLwt_u2hgaDJRgwieHSKelLTu7H-wQ/s1600/photo+4.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Yes - my socks do match my shoes!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year I discovered <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> brand socks. They are pretty awesome and great quality. They have different types for different activities and I have really enjoyed trying them all out. So what makes <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> so great? For one, the company is constantly innovating and focused on great fit. Their socks feature power bands of Lycra designed to contour to the shape of your foot and give you support and compression where you need it most. They also feel amazing - my favorite socks are the <a href="http://www.feeturesbrand.com/index.php/products/feetures-merino?id=221">Elite Merino+ Light Cushion No Show Tab</a> sock. I love how warm they keep my feet during winter running and they insulate my feet even when wet because of the merino wool. No blisters! They also have a lifetime guarantee and truly care about their customers. They are a company I can get behind.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> socks feature a "Perfect Toe" fit. This is their trademarked seam-free toe closure. The toe closure is hand-linked so that the inside and outside surface of the sock is completely smooth. This commitment to detail eliminates the irritation of traditional toe seams and makes running more enjoyable. <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> brand has really looked into the details of sock manufacturing and makes a great product.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
My obsession with socks paid off and I have the privilege of representing <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> brand as an ambassador this year. I got an amazing allotment of socks for myself and to share with friends and blog readers - so it's your lucky year! Check out their fun assortment of colors below and check out their <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">website</a> to see their brand new spring colors! Trust me, you are going to want to snag a pair or two. Feetures! makes low-cut socks, tab back socks, crew socks and even compression socks for recovery and performance. They've got you covered for whatever type of running or activity you prefer. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will be the first one to admit that I often run solo. Usually my schedule doesn't mesh well with others, so I am forced to forge my own path, but in a perfect world I would love to have a permanent running buddy or two to share the dream with. I was always a team sport girl. In high school I played varsity volleyball and basketball and in college I was on the women's basketball team. I thrive off the challenge of competition and working together. I love how teammates push you to be better. There is no better feeling. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixnxvvQdKkNew-M7NsvcQVwAWNCiwwjtysk0G7kOSbLi4OxIyFyOAOhJQzn1_lku3IKjsU5Ve6iDnvzk9qGUlXNnJWYA8ieEwweVDLS9Sv7N50R0MBQCtPLBR9oDsMJv9zaegpbJo_RQ/s1600/Nike+Running+Pic.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixnxvvQdKkNew-M7NsvcQVwAWNCiwwjtysk0G7kOSbLi4OxIyFyOAOhJQzn1_lku3IKjsU5Ve6iDnvzk9qGUlXNnJWYA8ieEwweVDLS9Sv7N50R0MBQCtPLBR9oDsMJv9zaegpbJo_RQ/s1600/Nike+Running+Pic.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Photo of me before a solo run {solo run selfie}</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In the beginning I loved running solo, but now, I think I would prefer to run with others more frequently. In 2013 I lead the Athleta Run Club in Roseville and loved it. After my husband and I moved I lost that connection with the girls I ran with. It has also become much harder to race in our new location. The city is so small that to attend any races I usually have to drive 2-3 hours. Always traveling for races can be a strain on the racing budget. As much as I love racing and the people that I meet at races, if I could choose, I would pick running buddies that push me living in the same area any day. Our living situation isn't permanent and we will most likely have the opportunity to move in the next two years, but the interim is hard for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Enough about my running journey. What this post is suppose to do is help you realize the importance of varying your training by adding a great team and what to look for in that team. A great team will motivate and inspire you in even the coldest, dreariest weather and push you to your best running. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, what do I look for when I want to get a running partner or team? </div>
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Chemistry - I have to be able to mesh with that person. We have to be able to talk while running or just run in silence, but it all has to be comfortable. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Faster runner - not everyone I run with needs to be faster, but in order to get better I need to have at least one runner that will push me and my intensity. I need someone I can chase and that will help me chase my time goals. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Schedule - Yes, you have to be able to run with me at least a few times a week. I have had a few running partners that continually say no and eventually I will just quit asking. I can't make someone show up to run with me. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Respect - We both need to respect each other and each other's goals. If you are training for a PR in a half marathon I am going to be your number one fan and supporter. I hope you'll do the same for me. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Someone who loves to take running photos - Seriously, I want to be able to document my running journey and the friends I've made along the way. So get ready to take some selfie's with me!</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Goal Setter - We all need to train for something. Even if your goal is simply to maintain fitness. I want to know about it so I can support you and we can both have a reason to show up to train. I'm all about goals. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
These are the things I look for and want to see in my running partners. They may not be your top priorities. We all have our own things we are looking for, but you have to have certain characteristics Whatever you do, when picking a running group make sure it is right for you! If you love going solo - more power to you! Do you have any great characteristics I should add to my list? Let me know!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The winter Olympics are almost here and I cannot wait! I am one of those people who tries to watch every single event. I just can't get enough. I wish they happened every year - though that would probably take something away from the achievements of the athletes. They are more special when they only happen every four years. The triumphs and upsets mean so much more when participants have to wait four more years to defend their titles or make a comeback.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year I am really looking forward to watching snowboarding, especially women's snowboarding. I met pro snowboarder, Elena Hight, at the espnW Women and Sports Summit last fall and was really inspired by her. We did the <a href="http://www.surfsetfitness.com/">Surfset Fitness</a> class together and she was incredible. Her core is so strong! One word describes her, INSPIRING! Want to learn more about her and snag a sneak peak of her awesome workout? Pick up the latest issue of Oxygen magazine. She is the cover model for the February issue and she rocks it! </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRePRiVuyhC_qE6057rsLpnIbzdepS2hC-FQO3YR2beoV4z8gTVv799DYpBE8-zXEWP1mklvnGUtb0L3TmvUb8hjQ7Cqp9CyAX8cKDl42a2q4r4YfUZhfbsKdmjV6eUr1lgHY4QsPDQ/s1600/elena-hight-.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbRePRiVuyhC_qE6057rsLpnIbzdepS2hC-FQO3YR2beoV4z8gTVv799DYpBE8-zXEWP1mklvnGUtb0L3TmvUb8hjQ7Cqp9CyAX8cKDl42a2q4r4YfUZhfbsKdmjV6eUr1lgHY4QsPDQ/s1600/elena-hight-.jpeg" height="640" width="482" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Olympic athletes are the most dedicated individuals. They train for years, and in most cases the majority of their life, for one chance to show the world that they are the best. They train for themselves, for family members, and for their country. The Olympic legacy spreads across centuries and with each new games, new stories of triumph and belief in what the human body and spirit are capable of is born. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We can't all be Olympic athletes, but we can all have the heart of an Olympic athlete. Olympians are strong, fierce, dedicated, devoted, focused and confident. I have listed the top seven things I have learned from watching the Olympics and meeting Olympic athletes. If we could all apply these things to our lives the world would be a better place.</div>
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Never settle for ordinary or for second best. Keep your hunger to constantly strive for improvement. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Failure is never final. Get up and try again. Everyone fails, but it's the ones who get back up that become champions.</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Get a team around you that supports you. They will be your biggest ally in victory and in defeat.</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Watch what you eat. When your body feels good you will perform better. Just because you aren't an Olympic athlete doesn't give you a reason to treat your body poorly. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Working out is a daily activity. It is a year round commitment. Olympians don't only train during the season, they train to maintain all year round. If you want to feel better about your body, feel stronger and get sick less, EXERCISE daily!</li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">No matter what your dreams are, no matter who tells you that you won't make it, you make your own destiny. Practice makes perfect. Follow your dreams. </li>
</ul>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li style="text-align: justify;">Fame is temporary. A gold medal only provides temporary joy. It's what you do with your ability after the glory is over that makes it all worthwhile. Make sure you give back to your community. We all have the power to make a change and make the world a better place. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Olympics offer a platform for inspiration. In the coming weeks I will laugh, cry and cheer on athletes to victory. I believe in what they are working towards and the goals they are trying to accomplish. They are pushing the boundaries of what has been done and what can be done. What if we all strived to achieve more than we did yesterday?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
January is coming to an end. It's hard to believe that the first month of the new year is almost over! This year I am trying to reevaluate my goals at the end of each month, look back at what I have accomplished and make a plan to achieve a new goal in the coming month.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This month I have been able to research out my options for personal trainer programs and plan on finalizing and registering for my program in February. I am leaning towards the <a href="https://www.acefitness.org/default.aspx">ACE</a> CPT certification. I have also been able to stick to my goal of stretching more this past month and plan on continuing this throughout the year.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My overall goal for 2014 is to break into the fitness world as a certified trainer and motivate others everyday to be better and stronger. It is my true passion and I have to stop worrying about whether or not I can make it in the fitness world and just jump right in and start working! Get ready to hear a lot more from me in 2014! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have also become an ambassador for the <a href="http://zoomarun.com/napa-valley/">Zooma Women's Race Series in Napa Valley</a> and couldn't be more excited to help promote this women's only event! I have a passion for helping women learn how fitness and running can help them build confidence and stronger lives and this is the perfect platform for me to share that love. Stay tuned for more information this coming month and a special discount race code from me to you! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Remember to dream big, set attainable goals and make your vision a reality. What are your goals for 2014? How are you working on achieving them? Let me know in the comments! </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Brand loyalty has always been a fascinating subject for me. What makes someone make a connection with a brand and become a devoted follower has always been an interesting topic. My degree is in Business Administration with a focus on Marketing so this side of business, relating to the consumer and creating a relationship, is a key part of my job and is integral to the success of any business. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm not quite sure when it happened, but I have been brand loyal to Nike since I was a child. My parents even found an old paper of mine from grade school where I wrote my goal of what I wanted to do when I grew up and I had written "work for Nike." I've often tried to pinpoint the exact moment when Nike became the brand I focused on for my workout gear and shoes, but there are actually quite a few. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For one, I'm a tall girl and I have larger feet. When I was in grade school I couldn't find any stylish women's running shoes unless they were Nike. Most companies have now expanded their sizes and 11 - 12 are common women's sizes, but I still contribute my stylish grade school kick's years to Nike. They were the first to cater to me and make me feel like I fit in. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In high school they were the brand that made my basketball shoes. Basketball was who I was and shaped my future goals and opportunities. It wasn't the shoes that defined me, or that very recognizable swoosh, but it was the self esteem, pride and accomplishment I felt when I laced them up. Nike understands athletes and they understood what I wanted. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In college I continued to wear Nike's for the college team and by then I just wouldn't have any other shoe on the court. I wouldn't say I made a mistake in college, but if I could go back and do it over I would have focused on researching what Nike looked for in an intern and pouring my heart and sole into getting the experience I needed to be hired on after college. I had one internship interview and my lack of experience in a few areas is what I feel like was lacking on my resume. I placed too much faith in the brand I love simply seeing my devotion and wanting to hire a kid excited about the brand. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't blame them. They are a great company because they hire only the best and often that comes with experience. However, what I don't have in experience I make up for in heart. I have been relentless in pursuing different angles at Nike and working with members of their team when I get a chance. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was lucky enough to be featured on their Nike Women blog, make it to the top 10 of a Nike Women Field Reporter Competition, become a Nike Women's Marathon Training Ambassador in 2012, participate in the Nike Running Epic Run Competition last year with my #RUNIRISHLUCK run (I came in third) and now be a Captain of their new online Community Forum. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibe2IPeL3xzcdgalwcUHpID9wMbiMRmbFkpQ07NroHsh5H71eWyNCK0uqsrT730PCIhRAnj0uaezbN6oO0FBnF-T1IJh8dEmmZJ4U7tjtwRbL8TYcCq69jS_YNtSJzrRxu1F9B35td7Q/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-01-25+at+1.01.16+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibe2IPeL3xzcdgalwcUHpID9wMbiMRmbFkpQ07NroHsh5H71eWyNCK0uqsrT730PCIhRAnj0uaezbN6oO0FBnF-T1IJh8dEmmZJ4U7tjtwRbL8TYcCq69jS_YNtSJzrRxu1F9B35td7Q/s1600/Screen+Shot+2014-01-25+at+1.01.16+AM.png" height="350" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My interactions with Nike have all been positive and I know they care about runners, dreamers and athletes everywhere. Sure, they are in it to make a profit, but the bottom line is that making athletes better products and offering them amazing free services such as the Nike Running app and NTC app, is one of their top goals. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So, I would have to say that my brand loyalty comes from a combination of my Oregon roots, dedication to sports, positive interactions and opportunities within the brand and my burning desire to work for the Swoosh. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nike's expansion of their live NTC classes are making more brand enthusiasts like myself around the world. Bottom line: Nike is doing everything right. They are offering free training, product trials and a community to keep you coming back for more. They are giving the consumer an experience - not just selling them a shoe or new running shorts. You want to come back because of the value you place on the experience. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I'm not near a Nike store I can do NTC at home with the app and interact with Nike on Twitter and Facebook. They always respond with motivational words and keep me motivated to continue training even at a distance. The community they have built is strong and keeps getting stronger. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Fitness is a part of my life and Nike just seems to fit in. My car even has a four-foot swoosh sticker on the rear window. It's been there for six years. In essence - I am already branded. It seems to me that brand loyalty is a result of continuous relationships and creating value to a customer. If Nike ever stops creating value for me then my brand loyalty will end. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I don't have complete exclusivity with Nike, I still enjoy wearing other brands. I have a love for Athleta's girly fitness style and Under Armour Women impresses me with their I WILL campaign and commitment to women in sports. Nike just has my heart. It was my first love and I do not have a negative thing to say about them. I have become brand loyal due to nearly two decades of interaction with them and positive memories and experiences from sporting the Swoosh. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nike is just one example of my brand loyalty, just ask my hubby! He's a bit baffled by my commitment to the brands I love. <a href="http://pocketfuelnaturals.com/">Pocketfuel</a>, <a href="http://nuun.com/">Nuun Hydration </a>and <a href="http://feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a> socks to name a few. But what these companies all have in common is a commitment to quality, interaction with customers no matter who they are and amazing customer service. I stay committed to those companies that create value for me. Companies earn my loyalty. They earn it and maintain it with their actions. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Am I brand loyal? Absolutely. I am also loyal in every other aspect of my life and that is who I am. If you have my back, I will have yours every time. </div>
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Do you ever feel like your body is just out of sync? This week I have been feeling a bit off. At first I thought it was from not working out as often as I wanted, then I thought it was from the weights I lifted, but I am beginning to realize it is a combination of many things I haven't been doing right lately. I have been exercising and I even tried a new gym this week with a new trainer. My workouts have been great! It's before and after them that my body just feels dead. I finally decided that enough was enough and have been looking for the problem so that I can set about solving it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
So, what's out of place in my life? First off, I have been working a lot from home at my very desk centric job. I spend hours sitting which is not good! I most likely look like the very hunched over model in the photo below. To see the dangers of sitting like this click <a href="http://apps.washingtonpost.com/g/page/national/the-health-hazards-of-sitting/750/">here</a>. My shoulders have been extremely tight and my neck has been hurting. Bottom line - it's my fault. I keep meaning to purchase a standing desk, or any desk at all for that matter, and set it up in the office but I have neglected to make it a priority and now I am paying a price. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPYtf7LTdaPCqDJY2J7ur52_fPMg_MIZ4nXLABg2Qs4TfjSL_f9f_XIVr0sGQy8lrAb3HuVUnB5vRpxmZxXQKZCIlzxf1Kw1aa6DIP_wT69FXaaw_YuMgmIdy5AhecgIsFaJGY8ZLROw/s1600/01b095f89c7814df4c06265f09c7c669.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPYtf7LTdaPCqDJY2J7ur52_fPMg_MIZ4nXLABg2Qs4TfjSL_f9f_XIVr0sGQy8lrAb3HuVUnB5vRpxmZxXQKZCIlzxf1Kw1aa6DIP_wT69FXaaw_YuMgmIdy5AhecgIsFaJGY8ZLROw/s1600/01b095f89c7814df4c06265f09c7c669.jpg" height="640" width="356" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Moral of the story. Make time for ensuring that you are sitting at a properly sized desk and take breaks every hour. They don't have to be long breaks, but at least get up once and move around. Do 30 jumping jacks, walk around your building or do some yoga poses. Your body, health and employer will be thankful that you cared enough for yourself to make time to stay healthy! For an even better burn, get the whole office involved. An office that is fit together, stays together!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxiWshRBqtqU6STUqBVGTBfCHzehABZwyKJfiMyqWSL6uXAZTZzEafPdXxSt40qwvinejt8dkodjTOqfPJBT2HzFfMhbxOmT9kiMiGC_xV5G1wZ7i0__31MYh50dt34UkK4MxIwL6i1w/s1600/Yoga.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxiWshRBqtqU6STUqBVGTBfCHzehABZwyKJfiMyqWSL6uXAZTZzEafPdXxSt40qwvinejt8dkodjTOqfPJBT2HzFfMhbxOmT9kiMiGC_xV5G1wZ7i0__31MYh50dt34UkK4MxIwL6i1w/s1600/Yoga.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div>
The second thing that is out of sync is my lack of carving out time for myself to relax and stretch! I am so inflexible it's not even funny, but that will only get worse the more I run and older I get, so stretching needs to be a part of my every day routine. I have actually committed to it and have done it the past few days. You know what? I feel so much better! If you can't get to a gym or studio just do some simple poses in your living room or out on your lawn. I like to do <a href="http://www.leahkim.com/">Leah Kim's</a> yoga workout that is free on the <a href="http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/womens-training/apps/nike-training-club">Nike Training Club</a> app. I feel much more relaxed and rejuvenated after only a 15 minute yoga session. Here are some at home poses you can do when you just have a short time frame or before bed to relax your muscles. </div>
<div>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Forward Fold for 1-minute</li>
<li>Downward dog for 1-minute</li>
<li>Sun Salutations for 2-minutes</li>
<li>Warrior I and Warrior II for 2 minutes</li>
<li>Child's pose for 2-minutes</li>
</ul>
<div>
Trust me. Do these poses for just a few days and you'll notice a huge difference in your flexibility and relaxation. </div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Finally, I have not been drinking nearly enough water! I have noticed a very obvious let down in my runs and have been more tired and irritable. Yes - water is to blame! We may be in a drought in California, but that is not a reason for me to quit drinking water. My lawn may get a little dried up - but I can't do that to myself. </div>
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr2Q7gNje3KneeTuLawekBmZaT5BOZqCtTF3bnE6ma9H50YnDHZQDcibpitz2hqW5-2BikPQYgj2Y_APhsZVVSvsz1tSMF5Halygrw8jNr8mX8_9ry-LSe-Yx31-wYqZhpXkG7H8LfLw/s1600/water.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr2Q7gNje3KneeTuLawekBmZaT5BOZqCtTF3bnE6ma9H50YnDHZQDcibpitz2hqW5-2BikPQYgj2Y_APhsZVVSvsz1tSMF5Halygrw8jNr8mX8_9ry-LSe-Yx31-wYqZhpXkG7H8LfLw/s1600/water.JPG" height="400" width="380" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What am I doing to solve this problem? A water timer! Yes, my phone will alert me every hour to drink more water. My goal is to down four water bottles a day and I believe this is a fool proof plan! I will also be adding <a href="http://nuun.com/">Nuun</a> to my water pre and post run for added electrolytes. Dehydration has met it's match!<br />
<br />
I'm taking steps to correct some imbalances in my life and these are just a few that I have noticed. Maybe you are experiencing the same thing or perhaps another part of your life is out of sync. I encourage you to evaluate what you need to do to get back on track and start enjoying your days! Sometimes it's the little things that we neglect on a daily basis that make a huge difference. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Color Run is coming back to Sacramento in a big way in 2014! In fact, their whole tour is upgraded with more color, more swag and more fun! This race really is a magical time. I have been able to do the last two races in Sacramento and they have been better each year. I bring new friends and new runners to the sport with <a href="http://thecolorrun.com/">The Color Run</a>. It's a fast course and a very easy beginner race.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="http://thecolorrun.com/">The Color Run</a> is also known as The Happiest 5k on the Planet! Do you know why? Your only requirement to run the race is to have fun. You can bring your friends, your parents, your kids, your neighbors. There are no restrictions based on time and your one goal is to have a good time. Don't get me wrong, I love competing in races, but sometimes it is nice to just get out there and enjoy my friends company and run through blasts of color together! </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year The Color Run has branded its tour "The Kaleidoscope Tour." It has amazing new participant gear but still retains it color magic. Want to know what you get with your registration? New t-shirt, headband, wrist band and sling bag! That's a pretty sweet deal! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Arm candy is big this year and The Color Run has jumped on board. Right now I am wearing my <a href="http://roadid.com/">Road ID</a> bracelet, <a href="http://www.nike.com/us/en_us/c/nikeplus-fuelband/">Nike Fuelband</a> and Seahawks bracelet on my wrist. I can't wait to add this bracelet to the mix! Get ready world! </div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I'm especially excited about the sling bag because where I live you have to shop with reusable bags and this will be perfect for grocery shopping and spreading my Color Run love after the race. I'm going to get a lot of use out of this bag. Love yoga and gym workouts? It also makes a great bag for carrying your towel and water bottle to class. Plus, you can't lose it because it is such a bright rainbow of color. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqnvcI-1MWLLiwjudbqqON3tH8FdYDQiHsgkQ2_PGgCDR85ByqI9f9Ih-kaMb95Hi5aegjvHFy7Mx59qaQUW_RfzymeY9UF9sYlv3oELq6ru7Bd7Bb8q1UMl_HkSyyeF_x4Uj7swTyDA/s1600/1450778_580493975337985_548729284_n.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqnvcI-1MWLLiwjudbqqON3tH8FdYDQiHsgkQ2_PGgCDR85ByqI9f9Ih-kaMb95Hi5aegjvHFy7Mx59qaQUW_RfzymeY9UF9sYlv3oELq6ru7Bd7Bb8q1UMl_HkSyyeF_x4Uj7swTyDA/s1600/1450778_580493975337985_548729284_n.png" height="640" width="638" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Let's take a look at the t-shirt. The all new design this year is pretty sweet. It is made of super soft fabric and has a tailored fit! Ladies, you know that a tailored fit is important. Even if it's just a t-shirt we still want it to flatter. I've heard it said that it feels like a unicorn hug. Having never hugged a unicorn myself I can't really argue that point now can I. Bring on those unicorn hugs. They sound pretty nice to me. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
We are halfway through the month of January and halfway through my Nike Training Club January Challenge. I hope you are all staying strong with your goals and pushing through the tough times. (It's not too late to join my challenge either, for more information, see my previous blog post <a href="http://reasontoplay.blogspot.com/2013/12/get-ntc-fit-with-me-in-2014.html">here</a>). Often I lose focus halfway through a training cycle or plan and have to work hard to motivate myself to continue. When I need to find my motivation I have a few tips and tricks that work for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Top Five Motivational Tips:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>Make a schedule. Write down your workout plan for the week. Schedule it into your day. I set reminders in my phone if I am having a hard time making it to the gym. Treat it like a business meeting and don't allow yourself to skip out. </li>
</ul>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Recruit a workout buddy. I am always recruiting friends to come to the gym with me or come on a run. Often it's the start of a fitness program for them too. It's a win-win for both of us. You'll be more likely to show up for a workout if you know someone is waiting for you.</li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Don't be afraid to fail. I often don't want to try a new class or workout because I don't want to look bad. Let's face it - everyone starts somewhere and no one is perfect when they start out. So don't be afraid to take a chance. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Set a goal and make a plan to achieve it. Set check points and reward yourself when you reach each mini-goal. Get a massage when you lose five pounds, treat yourself to new workout clothes after you complete your goal race. Make sure your rewards are positive and keep you on track. A three scoop ice-cream cone is probably not a good reward. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li>Create a social support group. Declare your goal on Twitter or Instagram and follow people with like-minded goals that motivate and inspire you. Post progress photos and do weekly check-ins. </li>
</ul>
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWuJOgd3fGjMNc8QWt-sZOI6WdyNiBiPT-BoiFW8ZCF8-97jBsXDrwo2ZbYSMJADYW4r_N6a4i4mvQJZoaBFf22HJ2Dph-W6OESoY221_MHAUUbyfirTlr4Ze_qL0NeIkuNsGt6xWcTw/s1600/Downward+Dog.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWuJOgd3fGjMNc8QWt-sZOI6WdyNiBiPT-BoiFW8ZCF8-97jBsXDrwo2ZbYSMJADYW4r_N6a4i4mvQJZoaBFf22HJ2Dph-W6OESoY221_MHAUUbyfirTlr4Ze_qL0NeIkuNsGt6xWcTw/s1600/Downward+Dog.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My progress photo I posted to Instagram to keep me accountable for January.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Bottom line - find what works for you. You might need to test out different tricks to keep you motivated but find what works and stick with it! This month I have been focusing on stretching and yoga sessions. Instagram and Twitter have really helped me stay motivated and the support group I have built is phenomenal. Stay motivated, stick with your goals and if you need an extra push, I'm here to help. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have a love/hate relationship with running. I love the health benefit, the community and how I feel during and after a run. I hate the fact that I always seem to have a nagging injury. This year it seems to be my hamstring. In reality, I have no one to blame but myself. I have been neglecting doing stretching, yoga and physical therapy exercises on a regular basis. Sometimes it is just so hard to fit it all in! Before we moved I was taking taekwondo classes, going to a regular kickboxing class, playing tennis and running. I had a crazy full schedule, but I was fit! I also did not get injured. I was cross training more than I ever have before and it felt good. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Since the move, I have found a running group, but have yet to find the same community I had when I was in Roseville, CA and training at <a href="http://trainatthestudio.com/">The Studio</a>. If by chance you live in the Roseville or Sacramento area, you should really check them out. The instructors are amazing and you can really find a sense of community there. I haven't had the same experience in Ukiah and that's ok. I just need to focus more on fitting in cross training on my own. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This week has been all about cross training. I went to a spin class, did Nike Training Club strength and yoga workouts and lifted weights at the gym. Today I focused on Kettle Bell training and doing planks. If you want to do one of my favorite ab and shoulder burners do the workout pictured below. Hold a plank for two minutes and every 30 seconds alternate between mountain climbers and leg lifts. Work up to being able to repeat the drill three times in a workout. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr_e3N5IfZfd1MgLMqE-3Qh9CooW5dELAUP6aNMThxaE0URKGlEzu2XQLE-wA2LGvI2d2B2XfkT985gG4TfaGmB4sKFkrNTCvnf59bIRxoOy8cTVkRAM-812D7_CJlyD2-_ZgNh4s8XQ/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr_e3N5IfZfd1MgLMqE-3Qh9CooW5dELAUP6aNMThxaE0URKGlEzu2XQLE-wA2LGvI2d2B2XfkT985gG4TfaGmB4sKFkrNTCvnf59bIRxoOy8cTVkRAM-812D7_CJlyD2-_ZgNh4s8XQ/s1600/photo.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Plank to Mountain Climber and Leg Lift</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This weekend, along with cheering on the Seattle SeaHawks (Go Hawks!), I plan on going for another run. I'm testing the waters on my hamstring. I thought I was better a week ago, but after pushing myself a little too hard on my first three runs back and running back to back days, I have been feeling a tight muscle again. I have to officially start training for my first half marathon the first of February so I have two weeks to build a base. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Being an athlete is never easy but I am enjoying the benefits and path my journey is taking. In April, I will be a Road Runners Club of America certified running coach and hope to add personal trainer and Nike trainer to my resume soon. For now I am focusing on making myself a better athlete and a better runner through cross training. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I love running and dressing the part. I feel better about my running when I dress in the correct gear. For some reason - feeling like I look good while running boosts my mood and helps me run faster and harder. Recently, bright colors have been in and for good reason. Bright colors make you more visible on the road. Drivers can spot someone in bright colors much better than someone blending in with the scenery. One of my favorite bright running accessories is my compression socks. They come in every color of the rainbow and more patterns than you can imagine. Some of my favorites are <a href="http://nike.com/">Nike</a>, <a href="http://www.feeturesbrand.com/">Feetures!</a>, <a href="http://www.cepcompression.com/">CEP</a> and <a href="http://procompression.com/">Pro Compression</a>. I can pair them with any outfit and immediately add a pop of color. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Often when I'm finished with my run I still like to dress sporty. One of my new favorite outfits is a pair of leggings or printed tights with a cute pair of sneakers. Some fun shoes to dress up any casual outfit are the <a href="http://store.nike.com/us/en_us/pd/dunk-sky-hi-shoe/pid-771887/pgid-1058526">Nike Dunk Ski Hi's</a>! They come in all different colors, prints and styles. My favorite pair is from the Liberty of London collection and is pictured below. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxpNg5PKe7av4gyNZwBBMbik_or075wFCNyLKde1DRTFcCmD3t_H-SPWNY11x5qyiP_FTFcmZo5V96n29KiFTUgVgsr4b-wIlnNSwMSOjYf0YKLhW2T5QUQdnJRJB1sVaUxJajRRZS8A/s1600/photo+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxpNg5PKe7av4gyNZwBBMbik_or075wFCNyLKde1DRTFcCmD3t_H-SPWNY11x5qyiP_FTFcmZo5V96n29KiFTUgVgsr4b-wIlnNSwMSOjYf0YKLhW2T5QUQdnJRJB1sVaUxJajRRZS8A/s1600/photo+2.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Whether you are going out on the town, to a movie or out to dinner, these kicks can be paired with tights, jeans or even with a dress for a fun sports, chic look. Want to turn some heads? Grab a pair of Sky Hi's. If you are feeling a little more low-key just put on your favorite pair of sneakers and lace up.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm a runner and that manifests itself in all areas of my life. I happen to love living in workout clothes and casual sneakers, but not everyone is like me. Don't be afraid to try a new look every once in a while and strut your runner style, whatever that may be. Have a race coming up? Wear a fun, spunky outfit to the expo. Have fun with your sport!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
I apologize for being off the radar for the last week, but between returning from vacation, fighting one of the worst cold's ever and catching up on two weeks of missed work, my blog had to wait a week. Vacation did give me one thing. It gave me a bit of fuel for the following post. It's a little different than my usual fitness topics, but it is something I needed to share. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Holidays are about family. The good, the bad and the awkward always seem to show up during those brief periods where multiple family generations come together for the holidays. This last vacation had its fair share of exciting and awkward moments. Without giving you too much background information I will just dive right in.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am 26 years old. I am still extremely young and have huge goals for the next few years. I have always loved working and find my passion and spirit comes alive when I have a task set before me and set a plan to get there. Bottom line - at this point in my life I am career driven. In all honestly, most men and a majority of women are at this stage of their life, many are still in college or master's programs and have yet to begin their career journey. I am telling you this for a bit of perspective. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Over the period of a two week vacation I was asked when I was having children more times than I can count, often by the same person, once even by a five year old. In her defense, the family seems to have baby fever and it only seemed like a natural question to ask. However, I do not appreciate people inserting their desires on my life and constantly pushing me to do something that virtually changes my ENTIRE life, while barely effecting them other than their few visits during the holidays and gift buying. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I love my extended family, but there are some questions that do not need to be repeatedly asked. I am 26 years old and very into fitness and running. I travel bi-weekly for work and still have some countries I want to visit before I have children - if I even want to. I want a career that I can be proud of, in control of and I have big goals over the next three years that do not account for children. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Don't get me wrong - I think that having children is a blessing and I admire those who have children and couldn't dream of having another way of life. I, however, know myself and I know that having a child right now, especially just because someone else thinks it's time, is not fair to me and especially not fair to the child. I know myself. I know where I want my life to lead and if and when I decide to have a child I will let them know. But I do not appreciate outside pressure. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Most of all, I feel like such a question is rude. It's asking about a private moment that should be shared when I choose to. What if I couldn't have children? And even if I can, having a child isn't really something that needs to be asked, you'll know when it happens. It's hard for a women to hide that whole pregnancy thing. So whether it happens now, in three years or five, is it really necessary to push on a couple? Marriage doesn't immediately need children, in my opinion, it's good to take time to be with each other before adding children to the mix. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am smart enough to know that I am not ready for a child. I don't want to give up the life I want for myself yet. Having a child is a blessing and one of the best gifts that can be given. But it should not be done for the wrong reasons. I have dreams that I want to pursue and I know that they get exponentially harder to reach when you add an extra person to a family. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some people may call me selfish - but I ask you - how many women have children and are not ready for the commitment? Too many. It is never a good thing for a child to grow up in that environment. Having a child is the biggest commitment I know - more than running, training or a career. A child cannot be given back when you decide you are done - they are yours for life. More people should take this into account before they involve children in their lives. It's a permanent thing with no turing back. What is the harm in waiting until I'm 30 before having a child? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have my goals and plans and they are MINE alone. I don't tell others when to start a career, quit a job or have a child. I believe everyone needs to make their own decisions and the ones that are right for them. It is not my place to make them uncomfortable by inserting my opposing beliefs. I would never push someone into a life altering decision unless they explicitly asked my opinion. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Do I want children? Maybe - I'd love to have a little runner or tennis player someday - but when I do it will be a decision between my husband and myself alone. All I ask is that my right to decide is not put into question. I have one life to live and I will live it on my terms. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Have you ever experienced this or a similar situation with family or friends? How did you handle it? Do you agree or disagree with me? Let me know in the comments!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghnE4qXG4J4pnNxcFt4yzm-CbBskOjrT0XIFLqrXNW6CLT7JBa2yt5x1o5EJMt8xf9Gleku3CcD_wEc8lA7d17-D804e9voZdDwssJbhQ97rSb2OTfAh41LJDM6NLfOWVHHrSNaSZjig/s1600/photo.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghnE4qXG4J4pnNxcFt4yzm-CbBskOjrT0XIFLqrXNW6CLT7JBa2yt5x1o5EJMt8xf9Gleku3CcD_wEc8lA7d17-D804e9voZdDwssJbhQ97rSb2OTfAh41LJDM6NLfOWVHHrSNaSZjig/s640/photo.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What would you do if you knew you would not fail or if fear wasn't an option? I know that at least for me, I would be taking a lot more chances! Fear definitely stops me from doing many things that I would otherwise jump into full board.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's not that I feel I can't do certain things either, many times it's more the fear of what other people will think. There is often a pattern and expectation put on you by your family, friends or even co-workers of what is expected and stepping outside of that box is not easily done without receiving negative judgements. Taking chances isn't the "safe" method.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Being safe is not living. I'm not saying you should go jumping off buildings or driving carelessly, but in our life, careers and goals, playing it safe is rarely how you achieve your dreams or even the big office at work. The people who take chances, step out of their comfort zone and use their talents to change the ordinary are the ones who find their way to the top.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am not content being safe anymore and this year I plan on taking chances. I'm restless in a good way. I know what I want and now I just need to go about setting a plan to achieve my goals one at a time. I don't have any false belief that it will be an easy road. Nothing worth having usually is. However, last year taught me that even when I stepped out of my comfort zone with the tiniest step - big things began to happen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Small steps, as long as they are moving forward are often how champions are made. I am fully aware that I can't learn everything I need to know in one night and I will be looking to others that have gone before me and mentors in my life to help me stay on track. 2014 will be all about stepping out into the unknown and making it my own. I will be greater than my fears and doubts and stronger because of it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If someone questions what I am doing than I will know that I am headed on the right path. I want to disrupt the normal and everyday expectations and create something extraordinary. I plan to work hard in my community and career to become indispensable. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What would you do if you could not fail?</div>
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I was asked over Christmas when my next marathon would be. As of this moment I do not have one planned. The past few years I have had good intentions when it comes to marathons and training and I either get injured or am unable to complete my training because of a past injury. I have learned more about my body and what it is feeling and right now what it needs is some rest from long distance racing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This year my plan is to focus on running shorter distance races. I have scheduled a half marathon on April 27 and July 27. My goals for these races are to train without injury and achieve a sub 1:50 PR. I am also planning on running a few 5k races and really pushing myself to run fast at these events. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
A new race for me this year is the San Francisco Half Marathon (and Marathon) on July 27th. I had the privilege of becoming an ambassador for this race and am looking forward to running across the Golden Gate Bridge! If you want to join me - sign up for the event <a href="http://www.thesfmarathon.com/">here</a> and enter my ambassador code: DSC10TSFM2014A41 for $10 off registration. I'd love to see you at the race running the bridge with me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Training for races can be time consuming and often quite challenging. This year I will be focusing on not skipping planned workouts and seeing how far my training can take me. I am committed to making 2014 my best year for racing yet and staying injury free. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
How are you planning your 2014 race season? What distances and goals are you tackling?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This past year has been one of many amazing experiences for me. Looking back I had multiple priceless opportunities to advance my fitness career and learn more about sports and social media. Each opportunity came to me because of my hard work and dedication. Many people told me that I would not be where I am today, and that I wouldn't make it, while many more supported and encouraged me. As much as I would like to hear positivity from everyone - both have motivated me. The doubters to prove them wrong and the supporters to prove them right. </div>
<br />
I can't thank these people and companies enough for making 2013 a great year:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li><a href="http://nuun.com/">Nuun Hydration</a> and <a href="http://hoodtocoast.com/">Hood to Coast</a></li>

</ul>
<br />
<br />
I want to keep dreaming bigger every year. In 2014, I have a few goals and I know that writing them down makes it more likely that I will achieve them. Here are my top 10 goals for 2014:<br />
<br />
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Become a Certified Running Coach (class schedule for April with <a href="http://www.rrca.org/">Road Runners Club of America</a>)</li>
<li>Become an NASM personal trainer</li>
<li>Become a Nike Training Club (NTC) personal trainer</li>
<li>Beat my half marathon PR time of 1:53 - goal of 1:45</li>
<li>Rebrand my blog and have a fitness workout page</li>
<li>Work as a fitness model</li>
<li>Work with Nike Running</li>
<li>Expand my social media influence and knowledge</li>
<li>Become a founder of a Run Crew</li>
<li>Never miss an opportunity</li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Setting goals is so important for me every year. Last year I was able to achieve many of my goals because I had written them down and created a clear path to achieving them. This coming year I plan to work harder to achieve my goals and to help you achieve yours along the way. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What are your goals for 2014? Let me know and we can keep each other accountable! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The holidays are here and that means it gets a lot harder for me to get in regular workouts. Luckily, I have been able to fit them in at least every other day so far. It helps to have a membership to a gym, like Anytime Fitness, that allows you to use any gym they have anywhere in the country with just your one membership. I can also workout in the house using apps on my phone, such as the Nike Training Club app. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq6-wKesMa0FGTCt6YY2FhcUXVaLvZxGpRYq6Cf_CnlsNf4RwMA-iEiILIPmu0gokXXh7I_q1wHPlbkXeLjmjMF0qGNaRr-qcDY2GyIK4soLjQUAKLNSVFBwpPMSRzterkFdo2RNy7cw/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq6-wKesMa0FGTCt6YY2FhcUXVaLvZxGpRYq6Cf_CnlsNf4RwMA-iEiILIPmu0gokXXh7I_q1wHPlbkXeLjmjMF0qGNaRr-qcDY2GyIK4soLjQUAKLNSVFBwpPMSRzterkFdo2RNy7cw/s1600/photo.JPG" height="640" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Getting a workout in outside</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here are my top five tips for sticking with your workout and fitness goals during the holidays:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>Plan ahead - pack workout clothes in your suitcase and research places to workout before you leave for a vacation. Check the weather so you know whether it will be hot or cold weather. </li>
<li>Make sure you plan time in your day for a workout. For me, this means getting up and working out early - before family festivities begin, it I don't do this, I know I won't be able to workout. </li>
<li>Plan holiday activities that involve exercise that the whole family can do together. Hiking, skiing, snowball fights or biking are all great ideas and burn calories without taking time away from family.</li>
<li>Spending hours in an airport? Time yourself to see how fast you can walk from one end of the airport to the other.</li>
<li>Don't stress it if you miss a workout. Just remember to keep up your normal eating routine, don't binge out on sweets and reschedule your workout for the next day. </li>
</ol>
<br />
Holidays can wreak havoc on a tight workout schedule, but a few days or even a few weeks off may not be that detrimental to your fitness. It might even allow your body to rest and you may come back stronger after the holidays are over.<br />
<br />
For some extra motivation sign up for a race or fitness event in January or February to help keep you on track after the holidays are over and help you have a goal to motivate you to stay active.<br />
<br />
Do you have any tips to share with me? Send them my way. Happy Training and Merry Christmas!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I recently had someone I care about tell me that I am not an athlete. Since I don't win races on a regular basis and haven't signed a contract as a professional, I can't consider myself an athlete. In an effort to protect this person, who I really do care about, I will not say their name. I admit that this really hurt me. I train every day for life. I work hard to keep myself fit and continue challenging myself to beat my own personal best's at races. No - I may not run a 2:30 marathon, but I am in a battle with my own times to become a better version of myself. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I have always loved <a href="http://nike.com/">Nike</a>'s mission statement - "If you have a body, you're an athlete." As a company, if they chose only to market their products to elite athletes they wouldn't be the global powerhouse they are today. They know that everyone has the power to make themselves better than yesterday. Perhaps this is why I have connected with them as a brand. They seem to get athletes of all types - both the professional and amateur.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWfthVpD4-1AFTzomhMWFS5y7OJw6SAZ8qUc0pQ5AEN25hExDv8ktPw8aWyx4eCBl8pnhFcCJvuakQIVjy-QEZDjJYzFpmthoi2Y0BafCU0zIYa4fbPZQEGL6OG-7kO_4oVSoeZ2Bzlw/s1600/photo+1-1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWfthVpD4-1AFTzomhMWFS5y7OJw6SAZ8qUc0pQ5AEN25hExDv8ktPw8aWyx4eCBl8pnhFcCJvuakQIVjy-QEZDjJYzFpmthoi2Y0BafCU0zIYa4fbPZQEGL6OG-7kO_4oVSoeZ2Bzlw/s640/photo+1-1.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I will admit that I have struggled my whole life because I have wanted to be a better athlete than I am. I would give anything to become an Olympian, to be the best at something. I have come to realize that I won't have that opportunity, but that doesn't mean that I am not an athlete. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In high school I was cut from the varsity basketball team during tryouts my sophomore year. I wanted to be on the team so badly that I was in the gym everyday for 2-3 hours working on my shot and playing intramurals with the guys. Before the season was up I had been moved up as a swing player from the JV team to play on the varsity team. The following two years I was starting center and captain of the team. I wasn't naturally gifted at basketball, but I worked my tail off to become the best I could be and it paid off. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I went on to play on the team for <a href="https://www.wallawalla.edu/">Walla Walla University</a> and was named captain and MVP my junior and senior years. It wasn't a Division 1 school - but basketball at any college is not an easy game. I had a goal to play in college sports and I did. I'm not sure about you - but I would call anyone who played a college sport an athlete. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcKS3bBzySGK42ntxEFfjb6zbe-6e0Vg3vqmxyYabr4tb8dpZkf2BFI6I2nk5QnSyxlHFSbhwhr_jgJr_rrxpG6CVyP7cJW9nAByoSWsLU9EWuKJ5Mbh4m1enpRfrTk84yh9R4xMqfdw/s1600/photo+3-2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcKS3bBzySGK42ntxEFfjb6zbe-6e0Vg3vqmxyYabr4tb8dpZkf2BFI6I2nk5QnSyxlHFSbhwhr_jgJr_rrxpG6CVyP7cJW9nAByoSWsLU9EWuKJ5Mbh4m1enpRfrTk84yh9R4xMqfdw/s640/photo+3-2.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After college I took up tennis and took lessons so I could better my game. I joined a Tae Kwon Do studio at the age of 23 and two years later I became a Black Belt. I was chosen by <a href="http://facebook.com/niketrainingclub">Nike Women</a> in 2012 to be an ambassador for the <a href="http://facebook.com/runnikewomen">Nike Women's Marathon</a> and have run a total of three marathons to date. I also applied and was chosen as the sponsored athlete (yes-athlete is in the title) of the Roseville, CA <a href="http://athleta.com/">Athleta</a> store. I lead a weekly run club that met at the Athleta store until I moved to Ukiah this past year. I have devoted my blog and social media accounts to advancing women in sports and I am always willing to try new things. I still play on an intramural basketball league in town and am one of two women who play and I have the respect of those on my team. I am an ambassador for the <a href="http://thesfmarathon.com/">San Francisco Marathon</a>, the <a href="http://www.seejanerun.com/category-s/8222.htm">See Jane Run Half-Marathon</a>, the <a href="http://www.espritdeshe.com/">Esprit de She</a> race series, a <a href="http://fitfluential.com/">FitFluential</a> and <a href="http://www.fitapproach.com/sweat-pink/">Sweat Pink</a> ambassador and a <a href="http://prettymuddywomensrun.com/">Pretty Muddy Women's Mud Run</a> race ambassador. I'm not listing my achievements to say "look at me, look what I've done," instead I am listing them to prove a point. Would you consider me to be an athlete? </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have gotten most of the ambassadorships I have because I am seen as an athlete and as someone who is an inspiring and motivating force in the community. I consider myself an athlete but I have to admit that it hurts when someone close to me doesn't believe in me or have faith in my athleticism. Criticism hurts and I don't believe anyone deserves to be told they aren't an athlete because they haven't won a Gold Medal. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am a pretty self confident person and I don't let a lot get me down. Their comment hurt me, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. I am simply sharing mine here. I'm not sure if any of you have gone through a similar situation or have someone who doesn't believe in you, but if you do, just know that I believe in you. Don't let anyone ever bring you down or change who you are and what you want to become. </div>
</div>

This last week I received not one but two pairs of headphones from <a href="https://www.koss.com/">Koss</a>. These headphones are different from other headphones because they are made specifically for active women! In fact, they were designed by Olympic Gold Medalist, Dara Torres. I was sent both the FitClips - ear clip headphones and the smaller FitBuds - that fit in your ear. I have been on the hunt for new headphones and these showed up at just the right time! </div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The first pair that I tried on my run was the FitClips. The first thing I noticed about the clips was how light they were. They fit over my ear and didn't weigh it down at all. A lot of times the over the ear headphones will start to put pressure on the outside of my ears because of the weight, but not these, I hardly noticed that they were there. I also love the color. For anyone who has run the Nike Women's Marathon, these come in a great Tiffany blue teal color! They are also sweat resistant and come with three ear cushions, small, medium and large, to help you create a custom fit. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I wore the FitClips for the <a href="http://runcim.org/">California International Marathon Relay</a> race on Sunday and they were a great fit and kept the music flowing during my six mile leg of the race. The also kept my ears a bit warmer than they would have been if they were exposed to the cold - in the low 30's on race day - brrr!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The second pair of headphones were the FitBuds. These came in a fun, bright coral color. I liked the fit of these headphones. I had to put on the smaller ear cover to keep the earbuds in my ears, but once I adjusted the size properly, they stayed put. I will be wearing these for training runs and when I'm listening to music around the house. Personally, when I am running long distances I will be wearing the FitClips because I don't want to take chance that I have to worry about my FitBuds moving. This is just a personal preference. I feel the most secure in the FitClips and they will be my racing and marathon headphones. </div>

The Christmas season is upon us and that means it is time to do some gift giving and receiving. I have put together a list of some of my favorite items to give to the runners and fitness guru's in your life. Most of these are on my wish list, or already in my closet, so they are top performers! </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Let's face it, in winter it gets dark, early! A lot of time we can't get a run in before the sun goes down, or perhaps we want to run before work. Either way, it is dark outside. The <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Petzl-Tikka-R-Headlamp/dp/B00EHKNFCE/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_i">Petzl Tikka R+ Headlamp</a> will make those dark runs safer for you. The bright light will illuminate your path and keep you visible to oncoming motorists, while the rechargeable battery will keep your light going charge after charge. The light auto adjusts to give you brighter light when you need it and to conserve battery power when you don't. It gets an A+ from me! </div>

I have wanted a flash jacket since they came out a few years ago. I absolutely love the idea and how visible these jackets make you on the road. This updated version is breathable, water resistant and has hand warmers! I love anything with thumbholes and hand warmers and these are amazing! The fabric pulls down over your hands like a glove. Love the idea and if I could have one thing for Christmas, this would be it. Hint, hint! </div>

If you are looking for post workout warmth this sweater is for you! It is buttery soft and the long length is great with leggings and for us taller ladies. Out of my wish list this is the one item I have and I wish I could wear it everyday. It is my absolute favorite sweater. It's a bit more expensive than your average sweater, but totally worth it! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
These socks are excellent for winter training. I just wore a pair at the California International Marathon Relay in 20 degree weather and my feet stayed warm and dry. The Merino Wool in these socks keeps your feet dry in even the harshest conditions and the padded footbed provides top of the line comfort. They come in three different sizes so they can properly fit everyone's feet. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I love the Lunarglide line from Nike. I have run three marathons in them and the new, updated version is even better. The shield provides protection from the elements and keeps wind and rain at bay to keep your feet warm, dry and pounding the pavement. It's springy cushioning provides protection while running and gives you a smooth ride. It also features a reflective technology that lights up when automobile lights hit it. </div>
